Milligan professor edits commentary on Gospel of John

Dr. Craig FarmerMILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (July 8, 2014) — InterVarsity Press recently published a commentary, “John 1-12,” edited by Dr. Craig Farmer, professor of history and humanities at Milligan College.

The publication is the latest installment by InterVarsity Press in its “Reformation Commentary on Scripture” (RCS) series. This series examines the ways Protestant Christians of the 16th and 17th centuries interpreted the Bible within the context of their separation from the Roman Catholic Church.

The RCS provides a crucial link between the contemporary church and the great cloud of witnesses that is the historical church. The biblical insights and rhetorical power of the tradition of the Reformation are here made available as a powerful tool for the church of the 21st century.

Each volume in the RCS is designed to facilitate a rich research experience for preachers and teachers, and contains a unique introduction written by the volume editor, providing a reliable guide to the history of the period, the unique reception of the canon of Scripture and an orientation to the thinkers featured in the volume. Volumes also contain biographies of figures from the Reformation era, adding an essential reference for students of church history.

The volume edited by Farmer presents a continuous commentary on the Gospel of John by translating excerpts from sources authored by 16th-century theologians. The excerpts represent theologians from the Reformed, Lutheran, Catholic and Radical traditions.

Farmer joined the Milligan faculty in 1993. He has a Ph.D. in the history of Christianity from Duke University (Durham, North Carolina), a master’s degree in divinity from The University of Chicago (Chicago, Illinois), and a bachelor’s degree in religion from Haverford College (Haverford, Pennsylvania). His other areas of concentration include medieval and renaissance history, church history, history of Biblical interpretation and Islam.

Farmer also is the author of “The Gospel of John in the Sixteenth Century: The Johannine Exegesis of Wolfgang Musculus” (Oxford, 1997).

Farmer’s books are now on sale in the Milligan Bookstore.
