MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Jan. 15, 2014) — Milligan College will install a newly established endowed faculty chair, the Paul Clark Chair of Teacher Education, on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m. in Milligan’s Mary B. Martin Auditorium of Seeger Memorial Chapel. The service is free and open to the public.
The first holder of the chair will be Dr. Lyn Howell, associate professor and chair of the area of education.
“I am pleased to announce the addition of our ninth endowed faculty chair, made possible by the generosity of Milligan alumnus Kenneth Richardson and his wife, Revenna Richardson, of Clayton, Ind.,” said Milligan President Dr. Bill Greer. “The Richardsons have spent their careers in education, and Ken is a longtime advisor at Milligan.”
The new chair honors the memory of Dr. Paul Clark, who served on Milligan’s education faculty from 1965 until 1998 and is considered by many to be the “Father of Teacher Education at Milligan.” His vision and leadership led to Milligan’s initial accreditation with the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the expansion of the current curriculum and the development of the Master of Education (M.Ed.) program.
At Tuesday’s installation service, Howell will be honored for her work in continuing that legacy.
“Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Dr. Howell and the entire education faculty, our education graduates are among the most sought-after teachers in area school systems,” Greer said.
Howell received her Ph.D. in organizational learning and instructional technologies from the University of New Mexico. Prior to her arrival at Milligan in 2001, she taught high school in seven states from Alaska to Florida and worked in both secondary and higher education at several schools in New Mexico.
At Milligan, Howell has overseen the continued NCATE accreditation of the college’s teacher education program. During her time as area chair, she has been a strong innovator in non-traditional educational programs at the college, including leading the area of education in moving the college’s M.Ed. program online and in the development the Adult Degree Completion Program (ADCP) in child and youth development.
More recently, Howell has led the college’s efforts in its receiving Improving Teacher Quality grants from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission for each of the last two years.
“Dr. Howell personally exemplifies the educational mission of Milligan College, and she will represent Milligan well as the holder of this newly endowed chair,” Greer said.
