MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 26, 2013) — Milligan College’s a cappella groups, Heritage and Heard Mentality, will present a joint concert on Saturday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Milligan’s McGlothlin-Street Theatre of the Gregory Center for the Liberal Arts. The concert is free and open to the public.
Heritage is Milligan’s premier traveling ensemble. They have sung for many churches, community and civic groups, and regularly represent the college around the country. Noah DeLong, assistant professor of music, serves as the group’s director.
Heritage members include Nate Andrew, Colin Blowers, Ben Davenport, Carshala Davis, Lauren Holt, Lindsey Kyker, Tyler Luttrell and Erin Raines. Nathan Dickerson provides vocal percussion.
Heard Mentality is an all-male quartet directed by Dr. Charlotte Anderson, assistant professor of the practice of music at Milligan. The quartet began with mostly barbershop and gospel, and they now also do jazz, be-bop, some early music and traditional men’s glee.
The men of Heard Mentality are Joshua T. Crawford, James Douglas, Gabriel Rees, Matthew Rees and Tim Wood.
“Both Heard Mentality and Heritage are a cappella groups, meaning they sing without any instrumental accompaniment,” DeLong said. “A cappella singing has long been popular on college campuses across the country, and interest has only grown in recent years with the success of the TV show ‘The Sing-Off.’ The songs in this concert will show how diverse and wide-ranging this kind of music can be.”
The first half of the concert will feature each group performing favorite sacred pieces. Heritage selections include “O Sifuni Mungu” (All Creatures of Our God and King), “Amazing Grace,” “Our God” and “Be Ye Glad.”
Heard Mentality will sing “Create in Me a Clean Heart, O God,” “Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit,” and “E’en So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come.”
The second half of the concert turns to different genres of secular pieces, from barbershop to Broadway and from jazz to contemporary pop music. Highlights from Heard Mentality will include “Hello Ma Baby,” “Orange-Colored Sky,” “In the Still of the Night,” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.”
Heritage will perform “Here Comes the Sun,” “Bring Him Home,” “And So it Goes” and “Chili con Carne.”
Finally, the concert will close with both groups performing together. The combined groups will perform an arrangement of “Fix You,” originally recorded by Coldplay, and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” written and recorded by U2.
