Milligan sophomore named to Tennessee College Republican executive branch

Luis A. TreviñoMILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 23, 2013) — Milligan College sophomore Luis A. Treviño will be appointed state secretary at the Annual Tennessee College Republican State Convention in Nashville on Saturday, April 27.

“Luis is passionate about politics,” said Mark Peacock, associate professor of legal studies at Milligan. “His induction in the state convention is well deserved.  Luis has demonstrated leadership on campus and I’m excited for him to have the opportunity to gain further experience in Nashville.”

The Tennessee College Republican Committee (TNCR), the umbrella organization for all College Republican chapters in the state, is the voice of young conservatives in Tennessee. With chapters in all grand divisions of the state and all sizes of schools, the TNCR exists to provide representation and resources to enhance the college Republican experience in Tennessee. TNCR is governed by a board of directors (made up of one representative from each chapter) and led by an executive committee of statewide elected and appointed officers.

Treviño was born in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, and later moved to Brownsville, Texas. While a student at Milligan, he formally organized the college’s student Republican group and made it an official organization under the Student Government Association. He recruited 30 members during the first sign-up period and created Milligan’s first official chapter of TNCR.

Two months ago, the former president of TNCR contacted Treviño and asked him to participate in the executive branch of TNCR as the state secretary. After an interview process he was officially offered the position. He will be inducted on April 27 in the State Capitol building.

“Some people have told me that my induction is a reward for all the hard work I put into the Milligan group, but I say it’s a gift and a new challenge from God,” said Treviño, a political science major and legal studies minor. “There is still much more work to be done, and we’re only getting started.”
