MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 27, 2013) — Milligan College announced today that it will continue to diversify its curriculum by adding several new programs, including a new computer science major and minor, as well as minors in international studies, physics and social work.
The new major and minors will launch this fall.
“These additions will significantly strengthen Milligan’s curriculum and will provide important new opportunities for our students,” said Dr. R. Garland Young, vice president for academic affairs and dean. “They signify the culture of innovation that Milligan President Bill Greer has encouraged. Furthermore, they are harbingers of further academic program development in the near future.”
The new computer science major is Milligan’s second major focusing on computing. The college has offered a popular computer information systems (CIS) major for the past 16 years.
“Milligan is attracting more tech-savvy and mathematically-oriented students, and this major will allow them to explore another area where they can apply these interests,” said Dr. Carolyn Carter, professor of computer information systems and business administration. “While the CIS major focuses more on business and information technology-related coursework, the new computer science major is grounded in mathematics and programming.”
Milligan’s existing CIS major, also offered in an online format, is part of the college’s business area. It prepares students for careers in web design, IT management, systems analysis and design, and operations management. It also prepares students for graduate school.
The new computer science major, which will be part of Milligan’s scientific area, prepares students for careers in programming, software development/testing, systems project leadership and network administration. It teaches applications that are useful in business, industry, government and as preparation for graduate school.
Milligan used recommendations from the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM) to create its computer science major. The ACM reports that there are currently more computing jobs than qualified people to fill them.
“The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that computing has the greatest potential for new jobs in 2014,” Carter said. “Computing is part of everything we do, so Milligan has created another opportunity to prepare graduates for an in-demand field.”
The international studies minor leads students through an exploration of a wide variety of political and social phenomena, including political governance, economic development, humanitarian aid, non-governmental organizations and conflict. This minor is a great option for students interested in careers involving economic development, missions, humanitarian aid, human rights, diplomacy or international education.
The physics minor is designed to help students who desire to teach physics on the secondary level to meet Tennessee state standards. It also provides an important foundation for students who desire to pursue additional academic work in engineering or related scientific fields.
Finally, the new minor in social work is ideal for students majoring in fields such as psychology, sociology, economics, business administration or political science. The social work minor will broaden the academic experience of students in those majors.
