One Leg Up presents an evening of jazz at Milligan

one_leg_upMILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Feb. 27, 2013) — The Milligan Arts Council will host an evening of jazz performed by the band One Leg Up on Tuesday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m., in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium of Milligan’s Seeger Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

Based in Asheville, N.C., One Leg Up performs a vibrant mixture of upbeat gypsy jazz, Latin, swing and original jazz compositions.

“One Leg Up is a very unique jazz band that specializes in what is called ‘gypsy jazz’ or jazz in the style of famed gypsy jazz guitarist, Django Reinhardt,” said Rick Simerly, associate professor of music at Milligan. “This is a genre of jazz that is becoming more and more popular in big cities and includes guitar, violin, clarinet and vocals.”

Propelled by their self-produced debut recording “Gypsy Blue,” One Leg Up soon won critical acclaim for their “hot club” prowess. The group was tapped to back up award-winning Spanish guitarist Pere Soto on some of his 2005 U.S. tour dates. Also in 2005, One Leg Up performed at a concert and book show with Michael Dregni, author of “Django: The Life and Music of a Gypsy Legend.”

Over the years, One Leg Up has broadened its repertoire to include fresh arrangements of Django classics, vocal harmonies, original compositions, and innovative adaptations of classic jazz numbers in the French “hot club” and American “big band” styles.
