Milligan’s a cappella ensembles to perform live on radio

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Dec. 7, 2012) — Heritage and Heard Mentality, Milligan College’s a cappella vocal ensembles, will perform Christmas favorites on the radio program Studio One on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 1-2 p.m.

Hosted by Dave Carter, Studio One airs on 89.5 WETS and WETS HD1. Listeners also can access the program via web streaming at http://wets.org/streaming.

Heritage is a select a cappella vocal ensemble at Milligan.  The group, which was founded 30 years ago this year, keeps an active performance schedule representing Milligan at churches and other civic organizations throughout Eastern Tennessee and across the United States.

Heritage performs music in a variety of styles, including sacred, vocal jazz and pop a cappella. Currently, the ensemble is directed by Noah DeLong, assistant professor of music at Milligan.

The eight members of Heritage are: Nate Andrew, Colin Blowers, Ben Davenport, Carshala Davis, Lauren Holt, Lindsey Kyker, Tyler Luttrell and Erin Raines.

Heard Mentality began in 2007 as the brainchild of Stephen Morse, a chemistry major at Milligan, who was joined by Alex Henderson, Tim Laurio and Tommy Parker. The group’s “official” premiere was during the music area’s Broadway Revue in fall 2008 singing “Coney Island Baby.” That selection and “Buffalo Gals” have become the group’s theme songs.

When Morse left for medical school at Virginia Tech, the group disbanded for a short time, but Henderson and Laurio restarted the group in fall 2010 and were joined by Lucas Schmidt and Tyler Luttrell. Dr. Charlotte Anderson, assistant professor of the practice of music, became their coach and enlisted the help of Sam Blackwell, a longtime barbershop performer.

The quartet became so popular and sought after that in fall 2011 they became an elite, auditioned Milligan ensemble for class credit. Though they began with mostly barbershop and gospel, they now also do jazz, be-bop, some early music and traditional men’s glee.

The members include: Josh Crawford, Ben Davenport, James Douglas, Gabe Rees and Tim Wood.
