MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Nov. 8, 2012) — Milligan College will once again host the renowned Sonata Music Festival, a musical experience for young musicians of all ages, Nov. 16-17.
Organized by the Appalachian Classical Music Association, this festival draws student musicians from several states to perform for an elite group of judges and compete for prizes.
A young artist competition will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, from 4-8:30 p.m. in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium of Milligan’s Seeger Memorial Chapel. This competition is free and open to the public. The winner will be announced soon after the final performance.
Another featured concert, the senior performance competition, begins at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, in the McGlothlin-Street Theatre of Milligan’s Gregory Center for the Liberal Arts. Seniors in high school will compete in a concert style and winners will be announced following the concert. The concert is free and open to the public.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Sonata Festival. In 2002, the program started with 30 piano students and two teachers. The next year, the program doubled to 60 students and has continued to increase every year since then. The program grew from strictly pianists to string players, vocalists, flutists, trumpeters, saxophones, clarinets, oboes and harps.
In 2007, Milligan became the official location for the Sonata Festival.
