Milligan professor named to ETSU's Clemmer College of Education Hall of Fame


Alumna also honored at April 19 awards ceremony

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (May 12, 2011) — Leslie Hanneken, assistant professor of human performance and exercise science at Milligan College, was named to East Tennessee State University’s Clemmer College of Education Alumni Hall of Fame.

She was recognized for her achievement at ETSU’s Clemmer College of Education Honors Day Reception on April 19. Hanneken earned a bachelor of science and master of education in physical education from ETSU. She later earned an Ed.S. in educational leadership and administration from Lincoln Memorial University (Harrogate, Tenn.).

Joy Matson, a Milligan alumna and member of ETSU’s Child Study Center teaching staff, was also recognized at the April 19 awards ceremony for her work with the Center. Matson graduated from Milligan in 2003 with a bachelor of science degree in early childhood education, with a teaching credential in Pre-K through fourth grade. She also earned a master’s degree in early childhood from ETSU.

Hanneken joined Milligan’s faculty in 2010 after teaching at Tusculum College for three years. Her professional experience includes corporate wellness, non-profit program development, cardiac rehabilitation, and school administration and teaching experience at the elementary, secondary and post-secondary levels.

Hanneken also taught physical education in the Johnson City Schools and the Elizabethton City Schools. She also served as principal of Harold McCormick Elementary School in Elizabethton from 2004 to 2006.

She is a member of the Tennessee Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; the American Alliance for Health Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. She has presented several workshops on academic integration for her professional organizations and also has provided private services for local school districts.

Hanneken served as a committee member for the Tennessee Department of Education to create and revise physical education standards for Pre-K through grade 12. She also has elementary and middle school qualifications in SPARK, the only research-based physical education curriculum in the nation. In addition, her work has been published in “Teaching Elementary Physical Education” and “Great Activities Newspaper for Elementary and Middle School Physical Education Teachers.”
