MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 21, 2011) — The Milligan College Concert Choir will perform a spring concert on Friday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium in Milligan’s Seeger Memorial Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.
The concert will include “Heleluyan,” based on the Native American tune and arranged by Jerry Ulrich; the Coronation Anthem No. 1, “Zadok the Priest,” by G.F. Handel; choral selections from the Broadway musical, “The Secret Garden;” and three African-American spiritual arrangements, “My Lord, What a Mournin,’” “Hush! Somebody’s Callin’ My Name” and “Jonah!” They will also perform three selections by the late American composer and conductor Lloyd Pfautsch.
The choir is directed by Douglas Grove De-Jarnett and student assistant conductor Shauna Slemp. Grove-DeJarnett also serves as minister of music and congregational life for Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City, Tenn.
“The Milligan Concert Choir has sung to several of choral music’s master compositions this past year, including the Brahms ‘Requiem’ and Benjamin Britten’s ‘Rejoice in the Lamb,’” Grove-DeJarnett said. “We are excited to conclude our year with a broad selection of choral literature from a variety of periods. It will be a very enjoyable and listenable concert.”
The Milligan choir upholds a long tradition as an outstanding college choir. Last November, the choir sang for an international audience of almost 5,000 people at the National Missionary Convention in Lexington, Ky. In March, it was one of the four featured choirs singing the Brahms “Ein Deutsches Requiem” with the Symphony of the Mountains.
