Journeys Lecture to honor retiring Milligan president and faculty

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 7, 2011) — Three individuals steeped in Milligan College history will speak at the college’s Journeys Lecture on Tuesday, April 12, at 7 p.m. in Milligan’s Hyder Auditorium.

Hosted by the Milligan chapter of Alpha Chi, the event will feature three retiring members of the Milligan community — President Donald Jeanes and professors Jack Knowles and Norma Morrison. This event is free and open to the public.

Jeanes, Knowles and Morrison will share their unique memories, stories and experiences from their combined 85 years at Milligan. A short question and answer session and an informal reception will follow the speeches.

“The Journeys Lecture is a way for students, staff, faculty and the community to express their thanks to our retiring president and faculty for their years of service to Milligan,” said senior Katie Lindner, president of Alpha Chi.

Jeanes is retiring after 14 years of sound leadership and dedicated service to Milligan. A Milligan alumnus, he served as an active member of Milligan’s Board from 1981 until he was appointed to the Milligan presidency in 1997. Jeanes quickly built on the strong foundation left by retiring president Marshall Leggett, expanding programming, enrollment, facilities and the college’s reputation.

Knowles, professor emeritus of English, has taught at Milligan for more than 40 years. He began his career in 1970 and has since served as coordinator of freshman humanities, director of the humanities program, area chair of humane learning and associate academic dean. He was also the women’s tennis coach from 1989 to 1993. In 2004, Milligan awarded him the Fide et Amore Distinguished Service Citation.

Morrison, professor of education, began her work at Milligan in 1982. While at Milligan, she served for seven years as the director of the Creative Arts Camp for children. She also received the Golden Gift Award from Delta Kappa Gamma for her study in Italy and her presentation on the Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Childhood teaching in Frankfurt, Germany.

Jeanes will continue to serve in the role of chancellor following his retirement on July 15. In addition, Knowles and Morrison plan to continue teaching part time at Milligan.
