Milligan concert choir to perform with Symphony of the Mountains


MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 9, 2011) – The Milligan College Concert Choir will join with the Civic Chorale and the Voices of the Mountains to perform with Symphony of the Mountains on Saturday, March 19, at 8 p.m. The concert will be held at the Toy F. Reid Auditorium in Kingsport, Tenn. Tickets are $25 for adults and free to students.

Symphony of the Mountains, conducted by Cornelia Laemmli Orth, will perform Johannes Brahms’ choral masterwork “Ein Deutsches Requiem” (“A German Requiem”). Guest artists include Cecily Nall and Andrew Wentzel.

The Milligan Concert Choir is under the direction of conductor Doug Grove-DeJarnett. He also serves as minister of music and congregational life for Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City, Tenn. DeJarnett has a bachelor’s degree from Western Carolina University in North Carolina and master’s degrees in sacred music and choral conducting from Southern Methodist University in Texas. He has also served as adjunct faculty at East Tennessee State University and as conductor of the Civic Chorale.

The Milligan choir upholds a long tradition as an outstanding college choir. At the invitation of the President, the choir has sung at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., and toured throughout England, with special performances in Coventry Cathedral and in the Civic Centre of the City of Birmingham.

From its beginnings in 1946, Symphony of the Mountains has sought to continue the tradition of excellence in musical entertainment and education, while enriching the cultural experience of audiences of all ages throughout Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. Sixty-five years later, what began as a small group of musicians with a dream has become an orchestra of more than 70 professional musicians.
