MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN. (Feb. 18, 2011) — Milligan College has moved its Master of Education advanced program fully online, making it more convenient for licensed teachers to earn a master’s degree.
“We have already been offering a few of our advanced M.Ed. courses online and have had great success with them,” said Dr. Lyn Howell, chair of the education area at Milligan. “Moving our advanced program fully online is ideal for busy, working teachers. They will still benefit from Milligan’s small classes and personal attention, but now they have the added convenience of the flexibility of online classes.”
In addition, the advanced M.Ed. students still have the option of taking traditional, face-to-face classes on Milligan’s campus.
The 36-hour advanced M.Ed. program consists of a 24-credit hour core and 12 elective credits. Students may also add an endorsement concurrent with their enrollment in the program. The program is structured so that students can complete their studies in 24 months, beginning in the fall semester, or they can complete the program one or two courses at a time as their schedule allows. The college also offers two four-week summer terms, consisting of traditional, face-to-face classes, or two eight-week online summer courses.
The advanced M.Ed. is one of two M.Ed. programs at Milligan. The other option, the initial licensure program, allows students to complete their master’s degree and teaching licensure in as few as 14 months. Milligan will continue to offer the initial licensure program in a traditional, classroom setting.
“In our initial licensure program, we are working with students who usually don’t have teaching experience, so that face-to-face teaching and observation of them is essential, particularly in the first two terms,” Howell said. “However, the advanced M.Ed. students are experienced teachers and can function very well in an online classroom setting.”
Milligan’s education area has also recently added a special education PreK-3 licensure program for undergraduates or for already-licensed early childhood teachers.
“We listen to the needs of teachers and administrators, and we’ve put programs in place to meet those needs,” Howell said. “Special education is one of the fastest-growing areas of education. Milligan’s program allows people who have a heart for special education to make a difference and help children and families.”
