Milligan students return to campus

Annual Matriculation ceremony a highlight of Welcome Week activities

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (August 13, 2010) — This weekend students will arrive on Milligan College’s campus to a whirlwind of activity, all part of “Welcome Week 2010,” Aug. 14-21.

One of the most memorable and meaningful traditions of Welcome Week is the annual Matriculation ceremony, to be held Saturday, Aug. 14, at 7:45 p.m. in Milligan’s Seeger Memorial Chapel. During Matriculation, new students officially “sign-in” to the records of the college and formally become part of the Milligan community.

“As they sign the roster, students are literally and figuratively leaving an indelible mark on the college, joining the thousands of alumni who preceded them,” said Theresa Garbe, Milligan’s director of alumni relations.

Following the ceremony, a bagpiper will lead the faculty and student body amid luminaries from Seeger to the Mary Sword Commons for a dessert reception.

“The recessional across campus, outlined by white luminaries, gives the event a stately quality that beautifully embodies the transition to college,” Garbe said. “Parents are moved by the symbolism of the ceremony, and their children long remember it.”

As Welcome Week progresses, new students will learn more about the campus, network with peers and partner with faculty mentors and team leaders who help guide them through their first year. For returning students, it is a time to reconnect with friends and once again settle into collegiate life.

On Saturday, Aug. 14, new students will move into the residence halls and attend several orientation sessions. Residence halls open to returning students on Sunday at 1 p.m.

A campus-wide worship service will be held in Seeger Chapel on Sunday morning. Later that afternoon the new students will travel to Doe River Gorge for a fun event titled “Kiss Your Momma Goodbye and Learn to Wash Your Own Socks, It’s the Doe River Gorge August Migration of the 2010 Buffalo Nation.”

Orientation continues and registration begins on Monday, Aug. 16. That evening, Milligan’s Student Government Association will host the annual New Student Banquet in McMahan Dining Center.

Activities continue throughout the day on Tuesday with classes beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18.
