“Eurydice,” a wonderful new telling of the classic tale, is given a bright and 21st-century twist by the brilliant American playwright, Sarah Ruhl. The play depicts the love story of Eurydice and Orpheus, whose lives are filled with promise until the Lord of the Underworld takes Eurydice away on her wedding day. In Hades, Eurydice finds her father and must choose between staying with him or following Orpheus, who has been given one chance to reclaim Eurydice and bring her back to the land of the living.
The production challenges audiences to experience theater on a heightened level of imagery.
“It’s like a dream in which strange events take on unaccountably powerful meaning,” wrote New York Times critic Charles Isherwood in a 2006 review of “Eurydice.”
Leading the cast of characters as Eurydice and Orpheus in the Milligan production are Candice Schlaegel, of Lewis Center, Ohio, and Colin Blowers, of Elizabethton, Tenn. Seth Woods, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., plays Eurydice’s father, and Brennan Seth Tracy, of Oblong, Ill., plays the Lord of the Underworld.
In typical Greek fashion, Ruhl has also included a chorus in her retelling of the myth. The Chorus of Stones is portrayed by Ben Richardson (Darlington, Md.), Samantha Rushing (Rockville, Md.) and Corri Richardson (Kingsport, Tenn.).
