MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 2, 2010) – Dr. C. Robert Wetzel, chancellor and retired president of Emmanuel School of Religion, is the keynote speaker for Milligan College’s 2010 Henry and Emerald Webb Lecture Series to be held Tuesday, March 16, and Thursday, March 18, at 11 a.m. in Milligan’s Seeger Memorial Chapel.
The lectures, titled “The Christian Liberal Arts College: A Leaven in the Secular Society,” are free and open to the public.
Wetzel has a long record of distinguished service in Christian higher education, including his service at Milligan College from 1961 to 1980, where he taught philosophy and humanities. He also served as academic dean at Milligan from 1970 to 1976.
Wetzel was instrumental in the founding of Springdale College within the Federation of Selly Oak Colleges in Birmingham, England. From 1980 to 1991 he served as the principal of this ministerial training school for the Churches of Christ in Great Britain. During these years he also held the position of Recognized Lecturer at the University of Birmingham.
In 1994, Wetzel became the fourth president of Emmanuel School of Religion. He retired from this position in May of 2009. He continues to serve the school as chancellor. He also continues to be actively involved at Milligan as an adjunct instructor in the humanities program. In addition to his teaching and administrative work, Wetzel has held pastoral positions with churches in Oklahoma, Kansas and North Carolina.
He has served as the president of the World Convention (Christian Church, Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ) from 2004 to 2008 and continues as a member of the executive committee of the convention.
