MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (February 4, 2010)— Ben Lowe, coordinator of a creation care movement called Renewal, will speak at Milligan College on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. in Seeger Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.
Renewal is a student-led movement active on campuses throughout the United States and Canada. The organization encourages and equips students to lead their communities in Christ-centered stewardship of creation and sustainability efforts.
Lowe’s views on creation care were shaped early in his life. His parents were missionaries in Singapore and Malaysia, and they often dealt with water shortages and poor air quality due to mismanagement and abuse of natural resources. He majored in environmental studies at Wheaton College (Wheaton, Ill.), where he helped organize Wheaton’s national Climate Change Summit in 2007. Before joining the Renewal staff in 2009, Lowe served as the outreach director for A Rocha USA, an international Christian conservation organization.
Lowe is the author of “Green Revolution: Coming Together to Care for Creation” and is a contributor to “Christians, the Care of Creation, and Global Climate Change.”
During the past 18 months, Lowe and members of Renewal have visited more than 25 campuses affiliated with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. His visit to Milligan coincides with the completion of Milligan’s Gilliam Wellness Center, the first building in Carter County to be certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
The campus has also undertaken several other environmental initiatives, including a campus-wide recycling program.
In addition to speaking to Milligan, Lowe will spend time talking with students and meeting with those who planned for his visit to campus.
“We are very pleased to have Ben at Milligan to interact with students and provide support, encouragement and ideas for campus sustainability efforts,” said Joe Whitaker, Milligan’s vice president for business and sustainability coordinator. “Renewal emphasizes caring for creation, and that’s just what we’re trying to do through our sustainability efforts here at Milligan.”
