MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (January 21, 2010)—Dr. Graham Leonard, an international expert on the Middle East and Islam, returns to Milligan College to speak on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. in Seeger Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.
A Kingsport native, Leonard has taught, lectured and trained people throughout the United States and the world. He was a Milligan student during the time the college was completely given over to the military for the Navy V-12 program (1943-1945). He earned a Ph.D. at Harvard University.
His teaching, consulting and volunteer efforts have spanned the globe, including work in Egypt, China, Lebanon, Iraq, England, Saudi Arabia and the West Bank. He served as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adviser on teacher education for United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). In 2005, he served as an embedded journalist with the Quaker Peace Team in Baghdad, Iraq.
In 2008-2009, Leonard was awarded the Wayne G. Basler Chair of Educational Excellence for the Integration of Arts, Sciences and Rhetoric at East Tennessee State University. Created in 1994, the Basler Chair honors a long-time member of the ETSU Foundation who is a strong advocate of numerous university programs.
