Rain can’t dampen spirits at work day

MILLIGAN COLLEGE — Milligan College’s annual campus work day may have been a soggy one this year, but spirits were not dampened as nearly 100 members of the college’s faculty and staff worked through the rain for four hours to prepare the campus for students’ arrival.

“We always look forward to our work day here at Milligan College,” said Beth Anderson, director of Milligan’s Institute for Servant Leadership. “We got a little wet today, but we all still had a great time and accomplished what we wanted to accomplish….We’ll have more stories to talk about later on.”

Participants worked to pressure wash sidewalks, pick up trash on the highway, trim shrubs, improve flower beds and perform some indoor cleaning tasks. Outdoor painting was postponed due to the rain, which fell for the entirety of the work day from 8 a.m. to noon.

Jeanes noted that any tasks not accomplished during the work day would be completed by regular maintenance staff before students’ arrival. Residence halls open the weekend of Aug. 15.

The work day has been a tradition at Milligan for 12 years, when the college was less equipped and the help was more necessary.

“It’s more of a community activity,” Milligan College President Don Jeanes said. “People who are in classes or offices all year get to see what maintenance, housekeeping and landscaping (staff) do all the time, and I think they get a greater appreciation of those folks and what they do.”

Anderson agreed that a highlight of the work day is spending time with people who work in different parts of the campus.

“It’s a great time for us to get back together,” Anderson said. “I get to catch up and see what everybody’s been doing this summer and what the plans are for the fall.”

Workers were also treated to breakfast and lunch from the college’s food service.
