Summer camps focus on the arts

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN ( May 18, 2007 ) — This summer children with an interest in the arts will have opportunities to cultivate their interest during Milligan Summer Arts Camp, June 4-8, and Musical Theatre Week at Milligan, July 23-27. Both camps will be held on the Milligan College campus.

“The Funny Side of Art,” this year’s theme for the Summer Arts Camp, is designed for children ages 7 to 13. Participants will experience drama, music, art, creative movement and more in a fun Christian environment that encourages each child to explore his/her unique gifts and ideas .

“This year we are going right to the funny bone by exploring how artists create laughter,” said Woodland Elementary teacher Keith Hertzog, who directs the camp. “Campers will look at the lighter side of the arts — learning more about artists who make them laugh, as well as creating a few laughs of their own.”

Musical Theatre Week, designed for children ages 9 to 15, offers participants hands-on experience in putting together a musical production. This year’s project, “Music Man, Jr.,” is an abbreviated version of the Broadway play by Meredith Wilson.

“Participants will have an opportunity to work in set-building, singing, drama and choreography as they prepare for their debut on Friday afternoon, July 27,” said Carlene Eastridge, director of the theatre camp and owner of Eastridge Academy of Music .

During both camps children will have time to swim each afternoon in Milligan’s indoor pool. Small group instruction at the camps is child-centered and focused on the appropriate developmental level of the child.

“We have many students return year after year, which speaks well of our commitment to each child and the fun and rewarding experience the camps provide,” said Eastridge.

The cost for each camp is $175, which includes everything except lunch, which the children may bring or purchase in the cafeteria for $5 per day. Discounted rates are available for additional siblings or for participants who register for both camps.
