Awards ceremony honors Milligan students


MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 20, 2007) — Milligan College’s Awards Convocation was a special day for many Milligan students who were honored for their accomplishments this past year. More than 50 awards and scholarships were announced by the faculty and administration during the annual ceremony.

Ryan Allcott, a senior from Pensacola, Fla., received the year’s most distinguished award, the Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award.

The Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award is nominated by the faculty and presented each year to a graduating senior who demonstrates outstanding performance in service to the college, potential for continuing the objectives of the college, academic record, and participation in college life.

Allcott also received the Stone-Campbell Journal Promising Scholar Award.

April Martin, a senior education major from Columbus, Ind., received the Dennis Bratton Leadership Award.

The Dennis Bratton Leadership Award is an award that recognizes a student for service in the community and on campus, excellence in Christian character, evidence of Christian service in a local church, and advocacy for change to improve society. The award was established by Hugh Jones and is named in honor of Dennis Bratton, senior minister at Christ’s Church in Jacksonville, Fla., and a member of the Milligan College Board of Trustees.

Martin also received the SGA Distinguished Service Award , as well as the Theatre Recognition Award.


Local students receiving awards include:

The Delta Kappa Gamma Outstanding Teaching Award was presented to Megan Aldridge of Johnson City. She also received The Outstanding Female Athlete Awardand the Human Performance and Exercise Science Physical Education Award.

The Theatre Recognition Award , which acknowledges graduating seniors who have made a significant contribution to the theatre program while students at Milligan, was presented to Lauren Anderson of Johnson City, Amanda Green of Bristol, Va., Robert Kitchens ofElizabethton, and Andrew Roberson of Milligan College.

The Performing and Visual Arts Outstanding Student Scholarship is awarded each year to a rising junior or senior fine arts major who has a minimum 3.0 GPA and who also has found significant ways to connect to the many facets of Milligan’s fine arts program. This year’s recipient was Kayla Metcalf of Greeneville, Tenn.

Kelly Sams of Jonesborough received the Music Educators National Conference Student Chapter Award and The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Music,which is presented to the person deemed to have the most consistently exhibited excellence in music courses, ensembles and personal performance.

The Outstanding Academic Student Award was presented to Julie Simerly ofElizabethton . She also received The English Award.

The Master of Education Intern Awards were presented to Kerri Ankeman of Milligan College and Joshua Knapp of Bristol, Tenn.

The Outstanding Senior Nursing Award was presented to Sara Wright of Johnson City.

The Johnson City Press Tom Hodge Journalism Scholarship was presented to Jennie Kodak of Milligan College.

The French Award was presented to Hannah Smith of Johnson City.

The Legal Studies Award was presented to Thomas Jones III of Johnson City.

The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Nursing was presented to Katherine Presnell of Johnson City.

The Student Appreciation Award was presented to Dave Taylor, director of food service, for his continued efforts to improve Milligan’s campus and dedication to the design of the new cafeteria.

The Professional Learning (Education) Outstanding Student Scholarship went to Natalie Bishop of Erwin.

The Paul Clark Teacher Education Award was presented to Debra Mallinak of Kingsport.

The Outstanding Male Athlete Award was presented to Josh Ferry of Bloomington, Ind.

The Wall Street Journal Award was presented to McKenzie Whittington of Front Royal, Va.

The Computer Information Systems Award was presented to Andrew Stauffer of Houston, Texas.

The Social Learning Outstanding Student Scholarships were presented to Jeremiah Key of Walkertown, N.C., and Anna Hampton of North Canton, Ohio.

The Humanities Award was presented to B.J. Krug of Jefferson City, Tenn.

The Biblical Learning Outstanding Student Scholarship was presented to Matt Shedd of Straughn, Ind., who also received The Greek Award.

The Student Leadership Award was presented to Emily Hand of Anna, Ohio. The award is given to a graduating senior who demonstrates servant leadership, virtuous character, active leadership responsibility and potential, and serves as a role model to other students.

Hand and Melissa Gilleand of Stony Point, N.C., received The Fine Arts Award, presented to graduating seniors majoring in fine arts. Along with excellence in the classroom, this award acknowledges students who have best exemplified what it means to be an artist.

Theatre Recognition Awards were presented to Melissa Gilleland of Stony Point, N.C., Leslie Johnson of Marietta, Ga., Bethany McAvoy of Butler, Pa., Angela McCann of Radcliff, Ky., Natalie Pfingst of Salisbury, Md., Hannah Potter of Fayetteville, Ga., Suzanne Richardson of Abingdon, Va., Christian Thompson of Pensacola, Fla., and Zoey Turner of Morgantown, Ind.

The Ross Bader Concert Choir Award is presented each year to the person deemed to have made the greatest contribution to the musical and spiritual life of the Concert Choir. The recipient is selected by vote of the Concert Choir members. This year’s recipient was Zach Leonard of Church Hill, Tenn.

The Humane Learning Outstanding Student Scholarship was presented to Abby Fiscus of Noblesville, Ind.

The Professional Learning (Business) Outstanding Student Scholarship was presented to Robyn Myers of Washington, Mo.

The Outstanding Biology Student Award was presented to Austin Turner of Franklin, Tenn.

Melissa Klay of Plainfield, Ind., was recognized with the Undergraduate Student Teaching Award.

Kaitlyn Ferry of Bloomington, Ind., received The Orchestra Award.

The Outstanding Communication Student Scholarship Award was presented to Brian Goad of Oak Ridge, N.C. The Outstanding Broadcast Student Award was presented to Josh Redden of Portsmouth, Ohio.

The German Award is presented on the basis of outstanding achievement, exemplary commitment and measurable progress in the acquisition of German language skills. This year’s recipient was Courtney Hosp of Austin, Minn. The Spanish Award was presented to Jessica Saltzman of Dayton, Md.

The Standard Publishing Award for Outstanding Promise in Christian Education was presented to John Toler of Newport News, Va.

The Student Psychology Major of the Year Award was presented to Amanda Seib of Aurora, Co.

The Legal Studies Award was presented to Shannon Reed of Arroyo Grande, Calif., and Beth Toner of Mill Hall, Pa.

The Outstanding Chemistry Student Award was presented to Eric England of West Union, Ill. The Lone L. Sisk Award was presented to Rosanna Couture of Canada. The Scientific Learning Outstanding Student Scholarship recipient was Samuel Osei-Bonsu of Ghana.

The Human Performance and Exercise Science Award was presented to Michael Johnson of Indianapolis, Ind.
