MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 9, 2007) — The Milligan College Jazz Ensemble will present its spring concert on Monday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. in Seeger Memorial Chapel on the campus of Milligan College.
Directed by Rick Simerly, associate professor of music at Milligan, the 23-piece ensemble consists of Milligan students and adults and college students from throughout the region. The concert will feature a variety of songs from the libraries of Rob McConnell, Doc Severinsen, Count Basie, Herbie Hancock, Maynard Ferguson and John Coltrane.
“Rather than having a concert theme or bringing in a guest soloist, this concert is going to feature our ensemble and soloists from within,” said Simerly. “In the fall we had a very successful run with the musical, ‘The Gospel According To Jazz,’ and in February the ensemble performed in the regional Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. After rehearsing and performing that music from August until February, I thought it appropriate to prepare a different type of musical program that showcases the ensemble and its talented members.”
Featured soloists will be Mark Thie on piano; Daniel Lockhart, Dick Davis, Danny Williams and Patrick Roland on saxophone; Luke Rogers and Robert Newlin on trombone; Jason Bailey, Jacob Pitts and Shane Ladd on trumpet; David Clay and Tim Wasem on guitar; Andrew Roberson on bass; and Eddie Dalton on drums.
“The ensemble has worked very hard in a relatively short period of time. I think their hard work is certainly evident by the quality of this program. It is one that everyone can enjoy,” said Simerly.
The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Rick Simerly at 423.461.8939.
