MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 28, 2007) — The Milligan College Orchestra will present its spring concert, “Songs and Dances,” on Friday, Apr. 13, at 7:30 p.m., in Seeger Memorial Chapel located on the Milligan College campus.
The concert will feature works based on dances from around the world, including the tango, waltz and soft shoe. Two Milligan College music professors will make their debut with the orchestra. Guitarist Justin Butler will perform the Vivaldi Concerto in D Major, and mezzo soprano Karen Smith will perform songs by Purcell and Fasolo.
The orchestra is directed by Dr. Kellie Dubel Brown, assistant professor of music at Milligan. Brown has been a member of the Milligan College music faculty since 1998. She serves as chair of the music department and director of the strings program and Milligan College Orchestra. She also is a frequent performer throughout East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and is the founder and principal violinist of the Appalachian String Quartet.
The Milligan College Orchestra was founded in 1999 as an expansion of the string program at Milligan. The orchestra provides an excellent ensemble experience for Milligan students and has broadened into the community to include students from East Tennessee State University and area high schools, as well as Milligan alumni and members from the community.
The orchestra performs throughout East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia and collaborates frequently with area ensembles, including the Johnson City Civic Chorale, the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra and the East Tennessee Children’s Choir.
The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Milligan College music office at 423.461.8723.
