Milligan students help raise awareness of social injustices

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 20, 2007) — Students at Milligan College constructed a hut this week to raise awareness and educate the campus on the poverty that inflicts the world today. The project was just one initiative that is part of “Justice Week 2007,” hosted by the Cross-Cultural Missions Committee (CCMC).

“Our goal for the week is to inform and educate the student body on the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa and other social injustices, such as poverty, that inflict our world today. We are praying that God will heighten the student body’s awareness of these issues and thereby convict them to take a stand against injustice,” said Emily Hand, a member of CCMC and a senior photography major at Milligan.

Themed “Seek God, Do Justice,” based on Micah 6:8, Justice Week kicked off on Sun., March 18, with students participating in an Asian game called Takraw. The week’s activities will include a Hunger Banquet, an art and letter writing night, a period of fasting, and community service projects. There also will be educational workshops held throughout the week: Tues., Mar. 20, 4 to 5 p.m., “The (Good) News” by Andrew Gibbons; 5 to 6 p.m., “Seeds of Justice: Why Food Matters” by Amos Nidiffer; Wed., Mar. 21, 5 to 6 p.m., “Recycling & Involvement” by Emily Smith; 6 to 7 p.m., “Invisible Children in Uganda” by Whitney Ramey & Meghan O’Neill; 7 to 8 p.m., “Bits & Pieces from my Recent Trip to India” by Jeff Miller; Fri., Mar. 23, 3 to 4 p.m., “Wholistic Missions: An Introduction to Community Health Evangelism (CHE)” by Brian and Tabitha Hauser; 4 to 5 p.m., “A More Friendly Economy: the Importance of Buying Local and Fair Trade” by Andy Ross. All workshops will be held in the conference room in MaMahan Student Center and are free and open to the public.

The week’s festivities will conclude on Sat., Mar. 24, with community service projects benefiting Habitat for Humanity and Ethiopian Education Endeavors. On Saturday night a benefit concert will be held in Seeger Memorial Chapel at 7 p.m. Admission to the concert is free; however, an offering will be taken to benefit One Life, an AIDS relief project sponsored by World Vision and Youth Specialties.
