MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 8, 2007) —Milligan College will present the Henry and Emerald Webb Lecture Series on Tuesday, March 27, and Thursday, March 29, at 11 a.m. in Seeger Memorial Chapel on the Milligan campus. Dr. Douglas Foster, professor of church history and associate dean of the Graduate School of Theology at Abilene Christian University in Texas, will be the keynote speaker. Understanding and attaining Christian unity will be the topic of this year’s lecture series.
Foster, who also serves as the director of the Center for Restoration Studies at Abilene, is a leader in the Restoration Forums and the Stone-Campbell Dialogue. He serves on the boards of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society and the World Convention of Churches of Christ. He has authored several scholarly works on Christian unity and the Churches of Christ and in 2005 served as the general editor for the “Encyclopedia of the Stone-Campbell Movement.
Foster holds a bachelor’s degree from David Lipscomb University, a master in theology degree from Scarritt College and a doctorate in church history from Vanderbilt University. Prior to his position at Abilene, Foster held positions as an associate minister, high school educator and professor of history at David Lipscomb University.
The Webb Lecture Series were inaugurated in 2003 to discuss the Christian Church movement of which Milligan is affiliated.
This 19th-century restoration effort, often called “The Restoration Movement,” was started by Barton W. Stone and Thomas and Alexander Campbell. It has generated several distinct church groups: the Churches of Christ, the Christian Churches and the Disciples of Christ.
“Throughout its history, Milligan has maintained an active relationship to the Restoration Movement. The purpose of the lectures is to build up the church by focusing on topics, ideas and issues that impact the church,” said Milligan College President Don Jeanes.
The lecture series is named in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Henry Webb. Dr. Webb is professor emeritus of church history at Milligan College and one of the leading Restoration Movement church historians. He has spent his life helping students, ministers and lay people understand the guiding principles of the Stone-Campbell church movement, explained Jeanes.
“We are grateful for the passion that Dr. Webb holds for our heritage and we are thankful to the Webb family for making this lecture series possible,” said Jeanes.
Both lectures are free and open to the public.
