Milligan celebrates Black History Month

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (February 23, 2007) — Milligan College faculty, staff and students will celebrate ethnic diversity and black history through music, poetry and art on Monday night, Feb. 26. “Black History Month Celebration and Paint Night” is just one of the events the campus community has participated in as part of Black History Month.

Last November Milligan College President Don Jeanes announced that the college would make a more concerted effort to build a healthy and ethnically diverse learning environment. As part of the initiative, the college introduced a scholarship for traditionally underrepresented ethnic students from Tennessee and appointed Rev. C. Danny Johnson as the first African-American on the college’s Board of Trustees. They currently are establishing a new office and coordinator for diversity services.

“We have long believed that ethnic diversity is essential to our educational and Christian mission,” said Jeanes. “But we have not seen much growth in this area. We realized we needed to be more intentional with our efforts, so we are taking the first steps in that direction.”

As part of the diversity initiative, the college is offering up to 25 scholarships for Tennessee students in 2007, based on educational achievement and commitment to service and leadership activities. The scholarship provides the balance of tuition, room and board not covered by federal and/or state grant aid or outside scholarships. Those of African-American, Native American, Hispanic or Asian heritage, or other traditionally underrepresented minorities, are encouraged to apply.

The scholarship is funded by the college and is named in memory of Johnson City resident Betty Goah, who died in March 2006. Goah attended Milligan College  and Vanderbilt School of Religion. She served on various regional boards and local agencies, including the Johnson City Development Authority, and was a member of Thankful Baptist Church.
