Local 4-H and migrant students hold photography exhibit at Milligan

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (January 12, 2007) — Over the past few months, “Bridging Cultures” has been the purpose and theme of Milligan College’s photography class for 4-H and migrant students from Unicoi County middle and high schools. On Monday, Jan. 15, at 4 p.m. in SUB-7 on the Milligan College campus, their photography work will be on display for an exhibit titled, “Telamon Youth Photographers: Bridging Cultures.”

Spearheaded by Alice Anthony, assistant professor of art at Milligan, and funded through a grant from Starbucks Coffee Foundation, administered locally by the Telamon Corportation, students met at the Migrant Head Start Center in Unicoi, Tenn., where they were taught photography skills that would enable them to capture their respective cultures on film. Milligan photography students assisted Anthony with the project.

“It has been a joy for me to work with these young people. I have watched them grow in their knowledge of photography and in their understanding of each other’s cultures,” said Anthony.

In addition to photography from Unicoi County students, the exhibit also will feature the work of students who participated in a similar project in Greene County. The exhibit will be on display through the month of January and is free and open to the public.
