MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (September 28, 2006) — Chinese artist of international fame, Dr. He Qi will speak at Milligan College during convocation on October 10, at 11:00 a.m., in Seeger Memorial Chapel. He will address students and guests later that evening in an informal gallery talk at 7:30 p.m. in Derthick Lecture Hall.

Following the gallery talk will be the opening of Qi’s art show in the Milligan College Art Gallery located on the lower level of Derthick Hall. A reception will follow in Derthick’s 2 nd Floor Lobby.

The exhibit will be on display through October 31.

“He Qi ranks as arguably China ‘s most internationally sought after contemporary Christian artist,” says the Far Eastern Economic Review. “His brilliant, colorful and highly contemporary paintings emerge unmistakably from ongoing Chinese contexts.”

Qi has been committed to the artistic creation of modern Chinese Christian Art since 1983. In his works he has blended Chinese folk customs and traditional Chinese painting techniques with the western art of the middle and modern ages.

Qi was the first among mainland Chinese to earn a doctorate in religious art after the Chinese Cultural Revolution. He wrote his dissertation while studying at Hamburg Art Institute in Germany , where he researched medieval art. His work has been on exhibition throughout the United States , as well as throughout the world.

Qi’s art has been featured on the British Broadcasting Channel, Hong Kong television, Asian Week, the Far Eastern Economic Review, Christianity Today, Upper Room, Augsburg Fortress, the Sing Tao Daily News, The World Daily and many other broadcast and print mediums.

A colorful, inspiring 128-page book, “ Look Toward the Heavens: The Art of He Qi,” will be available for purchase in the Milligan bookstore the night of the art gallery opening.

Qi’s visit is funded by the Milligan Arts Council, the Spiritual Formation program and a grant from the Milligan College Institute for Servant Leadership.
