Degree completion for early childhood education offered

MILLIGAN COLLEGE , TN (Sept. 25, 2006) — Milligan College will now offer a degree completion program in early childhood education through evening classes that meet one night a week. The first cohort will begin in February 2007.

Individuals who have completed about two years of college can complete the child and youth development major in about 18 months. Teaching licensure in early childhood education (PreK-3) may be obtained by completing additional coursework and a 15-week supervised teaching experience in a public school setting.

“This program is ideal for people who want to teach children in public and private schools, or to serve in leadership positions in church-related preschools or other early childhood programs,” said Dr. Lyn Howell, area chair and associate professor of education.

Similar to the college’s degree completion program in business administration, the child and youth development major is designed for adults who have completed 60 or more semester hours of college credit and the equivalent of two or more years of work experience.

“By scheduling classes only one night per week, the program allows students to work toward their degree even if they are working full-time,” said Howell.

Milligan maintains one of the premier teacher education programs in the region, with public partner schools throughout the Tri-Cities. Accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) since 1968, Milligan is one of only nine private colleges in Tennessee who are NCATE-accredited.

“Students who are interested in obtaining licensure are offered valuable field experience in teaching, assessment, and classroom management during a semester of full-time teaching in our community partner schools. This experience will prepare them for board certification and their future careers as educators,” said Howell.
