Concert Choir and Orchestra conclude spring season

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 10, 2006) — The Milligan College Concert Choir and Orchestra will conclude the 2005–2006 concert season with a performance on Friday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. The performance will take place in Seeger Memorial Chapel on the Milligan College campus.

The performance will be conducted by John Wakefield, associate professor of music at Milligan, and will feature several selections from the choir’s repertoire of the past year.

Joining the concert choir will be several students and professors from the Milligan community.

The first portion of the concert will feature works by Palestrina and Handel, as well as hymn arrangements, spirituals and songs from musical theatre. Accompanist for the first half of the concert will be Milligan sophomore Kylie Thiel from Rensselaer , Ind.

The second half of the concert will feature the choir accompanied by the Milligan College Orchestra, under direction of Dr. Kellie Brown, Milligan associate professor and chair of music, and will feature a performance of the Fauré Requiem. Also accompanying the choir will be Dr. David Runner, professor of organ and music theory, performing on the college’s 57 rank Schantz organ.

The Fauré Requiem is an exceptional piece of music,” Wakefield said. “Anyone can listen to this music and know they have experienced something of rare beauty. The quiet, sustained passages are so lovely while the more intense moments absolutely make the heart leap. My students love singing this piece.”

Soloists for the performance of the Requiem are Brett Andrews, baritone, of West Lebanon , Ind. , and Leslie Johnson, mezzo soprano, of East Marietta , Ga.

“We are privileged to have undergraduate students from within our own ranks who can perform these arias,” said Wakefield . “Milligan is a place where undergraduate students are afforded such opportunities.”

The spring concert concludes a season of performances for the Milligan College Concert Choir that has led them to such locations as Knoxville , Lexington , Indianapolis and Chicago , with spring tour performances before audiences of more than 4,000 people. The choir has also sung in churches, schools and other Tri-Cities area venues throughout the past year.
