MILLIGAN COLLEGE , TN (March 20, 2006) — Renowned author Phyllis Tickle will speak on the Milligan College campus on March 23. She will address the Milligan College community during chapel services at 11 a.m. and again that evening at 7:30 p.m. in Walker Auditorium located in lower Seeger Chapel on the Milligan campus.
The topic of Tickle’s 11 a.m. presentation will be “The history behind 21 st century Christianity – What your parents and grandparents were busy doing before you got here.” Her evening presentation is titled “Prayer is a place with rooms and a history.”
Tickle has worked for many years as contributing editor in religion to Publishers Weekly, the international journal of the book industry. She is frequently quoted in sources such as USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, the New York Times, PBS, NPR and the Hallmark Channel.
Prior to becoming contributing editor in religion at Publishers Weekly, Tickle was the journal’s religion editor. She began her career as a professor at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., and Furman University in Greenville , S.C. She later served at the Memphis College of Art as academic dean for nearly 10 years before embarking on a full-time career in writing and publishing.
In September 1996 she received the Mays Award, one of the book industry’s most prestigious awards for lifetime achievement in writing and publishing. She also received an honorary degree of doctor of humane letters from the Berkeley School of Divinity at Yale University in recognition of her work.
Tickle has written over two dozen books, mostly on religion and spirituality.
