MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 13, 2006) — The Milligan College theatre department will present “Proof,” winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the 2001 Tony Award for best play. Opening night will be March 15.
“Proof,” mounted for the first time in the region under special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., will run from March 15 to March 18, with shows nightly at 8:00 p.m. The play is produced and directed by Richard Major, Milligan College professor of theatre, and will take place in the McMahan Student Center on the Milligan College campus.
Critically acclaimed “Proof,” written by David Auburn, features Catherine on the eve of her 25 th birthday. A troubled young woman, Catherine has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. Now following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father’s madness—or genius— will she inherit?
Milligan student Angela Urgo of Indianapolis, Ind., will play Catherine. The role of Robert will be played by Equity guest artist Derek Davidson. Davidson is a former associate artistic director of the Barter Theatre. From 2003 to 2005, he was a resident Equity company member at Barter, where he performed a wide range of roles.
Other roles include Hal, performed by Tyler Simmons, a junior film studies and theatre major from Newburg, Ind., and Claire, performed by Lindsey Vogt, a senior servant leadership major from Alexandrea, Ky.
Stage manager for the production is Caitlin Smith, a junior fine arts and theatre major from Columbus, Ind. The associate producer is Crystal Roberson, Milligan alumni and artist in residence for 2005 and 2006. Scenic design is by ETSU associate professor of theatre and design, Melissa Shafer. Costume design is by Monet LaClair, a graduate student at ETSU. Lighting design is by Scott Hardy, owner of Light Impressions in Johnson City. Graphic design is by Milligan alumnus Chad Parker. Sound design is by University School student Will Major. The mathematics consultant for the play is Dr. Josie Ryan, Milligan College associate professor of mathematics. The box office manager is junior April Martin of Columbus, Ind.
