World peace through Christian unity topic of Webb Lectures

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 6, 2006) — Milligan College will present the Henry and Emerald Webb Lecture Series on Tuesday, March 14, and Thursday, March 16, at 11:00 a.m. in Seeger Memorial Chapel on the Milligan campus. Dr. Leroy Garrett, church historian and retired professor of philosophy, will be this year’s keynote speaker. He will speak on the topic of “World Peace through Christian Unity.”

Garrett served as editor of the “Restoration Review” for 40 years and continues to serve as editor of the newsletter, “Once More with Love.” He has been invited as a guest lecturer and visiting minister in 30 nations.

Garrett holds a bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian University, a master in theology degree from Princeton Seminary and a doctorate from Harvard University . He has served as an educator in the Dallas public school system, as well as a professor of philosophy and adjunct professor at several colleges and universities through the United States . He holds membership in many professional organizations and has received numerous honors throughout his professional career.

The Webb Lecture Series were inaugurated in 2003 to discuss the Christian Church movement of which Milligan is affiliated.

This 19th-century unity and restoration effort, often called “The Restoration Movement,” was started by Barton W. Stone and Thomas and Alexander Campbell. It has generated several distinct church groups: the Churches of Christ, the Christian Churches and the Disciples of Christ.

“Throughout its history, Milligan has maintained an active relationship to the Restoration Movement. The purpose of the lectures is to build up the church by focusing on topics, ideas and issues that impact the church,” said Milligan College President Don Jeanes.

The lecture series is named in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Henry Webb. Dr. Webb is professor emeritus of church history at Milligan College and one of the leading Restoration Movement church historians. He has spent his life promoting Christian unity by helping students, ministers and lay people understand the guiding principles of the Stone-Campbell church movement, explained Jeanes.

“We are grateful for the passion that Dr. Webb holds for our heritage and we are thankful to the Webb family for making this lecture series possible,” said Jeanes.

Both lectures are free and open to the public.
