Milligan campus to spend day in service honoring MLK Jr.

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (January 16, 2005) — Milligan College will honor and remember the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. as the “Picture of a Servant Leader” through a series of events this week, culminating in the third annual Day of Service on Tuesday, Jan. 17.

In lieu of classes on Tuesday, the campus will attend a 10 a.m. convocation and reflection service in Seeger Chapel, share in a campus brunch in the McCormick Dining Hall, reflect at various memorial locations set up throughout the campus and then spend the afternoon in service to the local community.

The convocation program will feature Boston, Mass., actress Kathryn Woods acting the part of Sojourner Truth. Truth spent 29 years in slavery and later joined notable abolitionists Frederick Douglas and Harriet Tubman in the fight against slavery. At the end of the Civil War she was appointed counselor for the Freedman’s Relief Association.

In the program, Woods will recall Truth’s early days as a slave, details of her strong relationship with God, as well as sharing poignant stories of her life. Woods uses Truth’s own words and the spiritual music she may have sung to recreate the inspiring woman and her story.

“This day of service is part of Milligan’s ongoing dedication to serving others. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and dreams reflect Milligan’s mission of servant leadership and it is appropriate for us to dedicate ourselves to serving those around us,” said Beth Anderson, director of Milligan College ‘s Institute for Servant Leadership.
