Elementary education program approved

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (May 16 , 2005) — Milligan College’s teacher education program has expanded once again, to include an elementary education licensure at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. This is a broad licensure area for those wishing to teach in kindergarten through grade six.

The licensure program was approved earlier this month by the Tennessee Board of Education, which establishes standards for the licensing of teachers and other educators in the state’s public education system.

“Teaching elementary school is a lifelong undertaking so this program was designed to enable teacher candidates to meet the academic and developmental needs of all students,” said Dr. Beverly Schmalzried, professor and area chair of education at Milligan.

The elementary education program is a comprehensive curriculum that integrates the general education core, professional education, an academic major, and a variety of field experiences in Milligan’s public and private partner schools throughout the Tri-Cities area.

Approved by the Tennessee Department of Education, Milligan’s teacher education program is also accredited by NCATE, the National Council for Accreditation of Education (2010 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20036; 202.466.7496).

“NCATE accreditation means that a degree from Milligan is instantly recognized throughout the nation for its quality. Our graduates can go anywhere,” said Schmalzried, who formerly directed the United States Air Force’s programs for children and youth, earning presidential and congressional accolades.

Other licensure areas already offered by Milligan’s teacher education program include early childhood education (preschool through grade three), middle grades (grades four through eight), secondary education (grades seven through 12), and K-12 specialty in physical education, music, theatre, and physical education.
