Milligan College presents free Christmas concert to benefit local residents in need

MILLIGAN COLLEGE , TN ( November 19, 2004 )— “A Milligan College Christmas” will be held on Sunday, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m. in Seeger Memorial Chapel. Donations of nonperishable food and toiletry items will be collected to benefit the Haven of Mercy, a Christian homeless shelter and daily meal program in Johnson City . The ministry, which serves an average of 250 meals daily, recently reported a shortage of supplies for the holidays.

The community Christmas concert is free, but tickets will be required and can be picked up at the Milligan College Bookstore or Music Office.

Dr. Kellie Brown, chair of the music area, said, “This beautiful production captures the spirit of Christmas for the whole family through the holiday music and the opportunity to help those in need during the season.”

The concert will feature several holiday carols performed by the Milligan Brass Choir, Orchestra, Concert Choir, Milligan Singers, and the East Tennessee Children’s Choir, which is under the direction of Beth McCoy.

At the evening’s closing, the musical ensembles will invite the audience to join in singing favorite traditional hymns, followed by a special candle lighting ceremony.

A suggested donation of canned goods or toiletry items is requested for the Haven of Mercy. Items needed include canned goods (non-dented), such as green beans, corn, baked beans, peas or soup, or toiletry items, such as soap, deodorant, shampoo, toilet tissue, shaving cream, razors or laundry detergent.

“There is a great need in our community, especially in the cold weather,” said Bill Ingram, executive director of Haven of Mercy. “We rely solely on donations of others to keep our doors open to the many disadvantaged people living in our area. Many do not even have the basic staples for daily living that many people take for granted. We appreciate Milligan College for thinking of us and reaching out to our community through this wonderful concert.”

The doors to Seeger Chapel will open at 7:30 p.m. for seating. For further information, please contact the Music Office at 423.461.8723.
