MILLIGAN COLLEGE , TN ( October 7, 2004 ) — Milligan College inducted 16 students into the Tennessee Nu Chapter of Alpha Chi National Honor Society at an induction ceremony on October 5.
Inductees represent the top 10 percent of the junior or senior class who have completed at least 60 hours of course work and maintained a GPA of at least 3.50 on a 4.0 scale. Inductees are: David Bielik of St Louis, Mo.; Missy Carter-Hyatt of Jonesborough, Tenn.; Mary Abigail Conley of Grayson, Ky.; Parker Creel of Mount Vernon, Ill.; Rachel Eng of Johnson City, Tenn.; Aaron Gray of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; Leslie Johnson of Marietta, Ga.; Megan Lease of Camden, N.C.; Irena Loloci of Bristol, Va.; Cheri Ann Lomison of New Castle, Ind., Jessica Leigh McDowell of Mechanicsville, Va.; Mandi Mooney of Rittman, Ohio; Ashley Rolston of Louisville, Ky.; Courtney Ruth of Kansas City, Kan.; Karissa Schrage of Carl Junction, Mo.; and Brandon Talbert of Mount Carmel, Tenn.
Milligan College’s chapter of Alpha Chi was recently named a Star Chapter by Alpha Chi, the national college honor scholarship society. This honor is awarded to only 15 percent of Alpha Chi’s over 300 chapters. Among the criteria for this award are inducting members locally, sending at least one faculty member and one student to the regional or national convention during the award year, having at least one student presentation on the convention program, nominating at least one student for a national Alpha Chi fellowship or scholarship, and sponsoring at least one on-campus program in promotion of the scholarship.
Established in 1922, Alpha Chi began with the purpose of promoting academic excellence and ideal character among undergraduate college students from all academic disciplines. Presently, more than 280,000 members have been inducted into Alpha Chi nationwide.
The name Alpha Chi is derived from the initial letters of the Greek words ALETHEIA, meaning truth, and XAPAKTHP, meaning character. Milligan’s chapter of Alpha Chi’s motto is taken from the Gospel of John: “Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” (John 8:32 KJV).
