MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (September 16, 2004) —The Highlands Ballet Company of Abingdon, Va., will perform at Milligan College in Seeger Chapel at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21. The event is free and open to the public.
The ballet company will perform pieces from their repertoire including the “Don Q” classical variation from Petipa’s “Don Quixote,” classically-inspired combinations set to the music of George Gershwin and a contemporary lyrical ballet piece choreographed to music from the soundtrack of “The Beach.”
Deanna Cole-Roberts, artistic director, will speak about the history and development of classical ballet and its distinction from and relationship to modern dance, jazz and other forms of dance. Members will demonstrate a typical ballet class and perform several short pieces to illustrate the process from practice to production.
Cole-Roberts, a founding member of the Bristol Ballet, oversees the Highlands Ballet Company with her daughter, Deirdre Cole, who serves as associate director. Dancers from the company will be joined by guest artist Sean Hilton, a rising professional dancer and choreographer who danced most recently with the Bay Area Houston Ballet and Theatre.
The humanities program at Milligan College invited the ballet company as a guest lecturer for its regular class sessions on Tuesday and Thursday.
“This is an excellent opportunity for the humanities program to provide exposure to the arts, that which most fundamentally expresses what it is to be fully human, for both students and the community,” said Jill LeRoy-Frazier, professor of humanities at Milligan College.
