MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN ( September 14, 2004 ) — Former IRS attorney and law professor Susan Pace Hamill drew national attention for her very vocal tax reform efforts in Alabama several years ago. Later this month, Hamill will lecture at Milligan on how her faith influenced her public service and argument for tax reform.
Hamill’s book, “Least of These,” addresses tax policy from an ethical perspective and uses Bible-based arguments to build a case for tax reform in the state of Alabama , as well as several other states whose outdated tax laws Hamill believes oppress the poor for the benefit of the rich. Her tax reform efforts have been featured in articles in the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.
Hamill holds a bachelor of arts degree from Emory University , a juris doctor degree, magna cum laude, from Tulane University , a master of laws degree in taxation from New York University and a master in theological studies degree from the Beeson Divinity School at Samford University.
She practiced law with the New York law firms of Sullivan & Cromwell and Chadbourne & Parke before serving as an attorney adviser for the Chief Counsel’s Office of the Internal Revenue Service. While serving the Chief Counsel’s Office, she taught business planning and partnership taxation at George Mason Law School.
Hamill assisted the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws as they prepared the Uniform Limited Liability Company Act, which was finalized in 1995. She currently serves as a professor at the University of Alabama School of Law.
She has published numerous articles on business organizations in journals such as the Michigan Law Review, the Ohio State Law Journal, the Washington University Law Quarterly, the American University Law Review and the Alabama Law Review.
Hamill will present the Institute for Servant Leadership Lectures at Milligan on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. in Wilson Auditorium of Hardin Hall, and at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, in Seeger Memorial Chapel. She will also speak to several classes about her efforts in Alabama.
Milligan’s Institute for Servant Leadership encourages students to reflect on how their faith is related to their career choices and what it means to be called to lives of service.
