MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (May 10, 2004) —Minority students in East Tennessee will have additional help in completing their college education at Milligan College. The Tennessee Higher Education Commission recently awarded Milligan the Minority Teacher Education Grant.
All Tennessee-resident minorities are eligible to participate in the grant program. The current grant provides $24,500 in aid and requires the college to match financial need 100 percent. The program provides tuition, fees, books and testing expenses.
Since 1991, 31 minority students at Milligan have benefited from this grant and most now teach in the state or region. The college has received over $270,000 since the grant program’s inception.
“The Minority Teacher Education Grant has been of tremendous benefit to our college and has brought about more diversity on our campus,” said Dr. Billye Joyce Fine, director of teacher education. “Student grant recipients, after receiving their degrees, have become influential teachers in our community. We are thankful our mission can be accomplished through such grants.”
