MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (February 6, 2004) — Who can forget the first notes of the Star Wars theme or the music from Gone with the Wind? Milligan communications professor Kenny Suit, who has spent his career studying and teaching film studies, knows movies and their music well. Suit will narrate this Saturday’s Johnson City Symphony Orchestra’s Reel Music concert at Milligan’s Seeger Chapel.
The program features a variety of movie themes, including the theme from Star Wars, Lara’s Theme from Doctor Zhivago, Tara’s Theme from Gone with the Wind and the theme to the Pink Panther.
“Music can really make a movie special and we are looking forward to bringing some of that music to life for the audience,” said Symphony music director and conductor Lewis Dalvit.
Suit will provide background information about the films and the role the music played in those films. Suit, who holds an B.A. in telecommunication from Baylor University and an MFA in film from Ohio University, has taught cinema at Baylor, the University of Houston, and the American University in Cairo, Egypt, where he was the recipient of several research grants, teaching awards and filmmaking honors.
In addition to teaching a wide variety of courses in film history, theory and production, Suit was the collection manager of the largest university film archive in Egypt and the manager of the weekly campus film series.
At Milligan, Suit directs the college’s film studies emphasis in the communications area and teaches courses in screenwriting, film history, documentary film, film and television criticism and animated film. In recent years, several Milligan communication students have entered films in independent film festivals throughout the U.S. and several have studied at the Los Angeles Film Studies Program.
“This will be a fun concert for music lovers and movie buffs alike,” said Dalvit. “It’s hard not to be swept away by these songs.”
The Symphony’s Reel Music concert is this Saturday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m. in Seeger Memorial Chapel on Milligan’s campus. They will also perform the concert on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m. at Tusculum College in Greeneville.
