MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (December 19, 2003) —The Turkana Art Exhibit at Milligan College by Kip Lines, a 1995 Milligan graduate, depicts the unique people of the beautiful, yet harsh desert landscape of northwest Kenya who are barely touched by the technology and influence of Western civilization.
The photographs in the exhibit, which runs now through Jan. 14 in the Milligan Art Gallery in Derthick Hall’s lower level, capture the desert landscape and the daily life of the Turkana families, from their meal preparation to shepherds herding goats.
Lines said his goal is to present the Turkana “not as the fierce, hard people one would read about in an anthropological text, but as beautiful, strong people.”
As missionaries with Christian Missionary Fellowship (CMF), Lines and wife, Katy, also a Milligan graduate, have spent the last four years living and working with the Turkana people. For 53 years, CMF team members have served as church planters, counselors, teachers and entrepreneurs, sharing their faith in 16 countries across the globe.
Currently on sabbatical, the Lines are serving as visiting missionaries at Milligan College where they assist in the Bible and ministry department, speaking and instructing in classes and meeting with students who are interested in missions.
During the time the Lines have served in Turkana, they have developed a love for the Turkana people and an appreciation for their country.
“There is a strange and beautiful landscape in Turkana, an amazing vast openness where one might not see another person for miles and miles,” said Lines. “The overwhelming sun, thorny scrub bushes, and stone-filled sandy soil leads one to wonder if anyone could possibly live in such a land. Yet people do live in Turkana – a hard people who have learned to adapt to life in the desert.”
The Lines currently serve as visiting missionaries at Milligan College where they assist in the Bible and ministry department, speaking and instructing in classes and meeting with students who are interested in missions.
The Turkana Art Exhibit is on display now through Jan. 14 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Milligan Art Gallery in Derthick Hall.
