MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (November 12, 2003) — Dr. Beverly Schmalzried, chair of the education area at Milligan College, will present a workshop at the National YMCA of the USA Child Care Conference this Friday, Nov. 14, in Baltimore, Md., on how she helped transform the U.S. Air Force’s child care system.
As family policy administrator for the Air Force, Schmalzried directed all programs for children and youth at various bases around the world. Her leadership helped transform their early childhood education program, earning congressional accolades.
Schmalzried’s workshop, “Transforming a Large Child Care System: The United States Air Force Story,” will help YMCA professionals understand and implement the lessons learned by the Air Force in transforming its child care system to a nationally recognized model for the nation.
The annual YMCA conference is held for child care professionals, executive directors, CEOs, program administrators and key volunteers. The conference theme, “Serving the Tapestry of the Whole Child” supports YMCA’s approach to serving children of all ages and with all types of needs.
Schmalzried joined the Milligan College teacher education faculty in 2003. As chair of the education area, she oversees the college’s education department, which includes undergraduate teacher education programs in early childhood, middle grades, secondary and select K-12 specialty fields. The college also offers a master of education program at both the initial licensure and advanced levels.
