MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (October 21, 2003)— Milligan College will honor nine of its alumni at a celebration banquet this Friday, Oct. 24, as part of the college’s Homecoming Weekend. As part of the banquet, the college will recognize individuals with the Professional Excellence Awards, Athletics Hall of Fame, George W. Hardin Spirit of Milligan Award, and the 2003 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year.
“These alumni have been selected by their peers as people who are not only making a difference in their communities, but who are exemplifying Milligan’s vision to change lives and shape culture through Christian leadership in various professions throughout the world,” said Theresa Garbe, director of alumni relations.
Dr. Ben Young of Kailua, Hawaii, will be named the Distinguished Alumnus of the year. Young graduated from Milligan in 1960. He holds a medical degree from Howard University and is a graduate of the psychiatry residency program at the University of Hawaii. He serves on the governing board of the Castle Medical Center. As a grant reviewer for the Department of Health and Human Services, he has been responsible for more than 10 million dollars in funding for the University of Hawaii School of Medicine in the last four years. Young was elected chair of student affairs’ deans for all medical schools in the nation. He was appointed to the advisory board under the Surgeon General of the United States for the Prevention of Violence Among Families.
Edgar Wilson of Knoxville, Tenn., will receive the George W. Hardin Spirit of Milligan Award in recognition of his life-long devotion and service to his alma mater. Wilson attended Milligan in the late 1930s and was employed for 28 years by the Tennessee Farmer’s Cooperative as the fertilizer plant manager and field representative in East Tennessee. He has long been a supporter of Milligan and has taken a special interest in the development of the college. In 1994, the Beatrice J. “Jerry” Wilson auditorium in Hardin Hall at Milligan College was dedicated in memory of Wilson’s wife, who was a nurse anesthetist in East Tennessee for over 40 years.
Professional Excellence Awards will be presented to Greg Allen, Louisville, Ky.; Dan McCall, Bristol, Tenn.; Judy Morgan, Alpharetta, Ga.; and Margaret Winkler, Birmingham, Ala. These alumni are recognized for excelling in their professional area and demonstrating high standards of integrity and Christian character.
Greg Allen graduated from Milligan in 1983 and holds a M.Div. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He serves as worship leader at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Ky., and is host for The Worship Network, which airs on PAX-TV. He has led worship for the main sessions of the North American Christian Convention and serves on the board of WORD/INTEGRITY’s Celebration Hymnal.
Dan McCall graduated from Milligan in 1986. He serves as senior vice president of the Monarch Primary Care Sales division of King Pharmaceuticals, Bristol, Tenn. At King, he has played a vital role in increasing the sales force from 45 representatives to well over 700 and has led his team to product sales of over one billion dollars, a first in the history of the company. In 2001, The Business Journal honored him as one of the Tri-Cities’ “Forty Under 40.” In 2001 and 2002, McCall received the President’s Sales Award from King Pharmaceuticals.
Dr. Judy Morgan graduated from Milligan in 1963. She holds a master of arts degree in cell biology from the University of Virginia and a Ph. D. from the University of Texas Cell Research Institute. Morgan recently retired from her position as faculty member of Emory University’s biology department. While teaching at Emory, she developed curricula for both biology majors’ and non-majors’ introductory programs. This work resulted in a laboratory manual, Investigating Biology, which is now in it its fourth edition and is used in colleges and universities throughout the United States.
Dr. Margaret Winkler graduated from Milligan in 1984. She holds a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina—Columbia and a medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. She is now medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at University of Alabama. In addition to her medical career, Winkler’s passion for missions has taken her to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Kenya, Mexico and Ethiopia.
The college’s Athletics Hall of Fame will induct Dale Clayton, Morristown, Tenn.; Kelly McCartney, Fishers, Ind.; and Harold Stout of Elizabethton, Tenn.
Dale Clayton was a three-year starter and guard as a basketball player for the Milligan Buffaloes. He earned eight athletic letters, four in basketball and four in track before graduating in 1973. Clayton also served as an assistant basketball coach for four years at Milligan. Clayton has been named South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year and NABC Regional Coach of the Year. He is entering his 16th season at the helm of the basketball program at Carson-Newman College.
Kelly McCartney graduated from Milligan in 1992. She played three sports during her time at Milligan: basketball, softball and volleyball. She excelled in all three sports before graduating from Milligan in 1992. McCartney works in orthopedics at the Community Hospital of Anderson in Indiana.
Harold Stout coached for 31 years on the college level, perhaps widely known for his 24 years at Milligan College, as well as his successful seven-year reign at East Tennessee State University. Stout has been elected to the Tennessee Baseball Hall of Fame and the NAIA Coaches Hall of Fame. He has also been named Southern Conference Coach of the Year and received an Award of Merit from the NAIA for his outstanding Leadership in Coaching and the American Association of Baseball Coaches Award (Outstanding Coach).
