Strings camp to be held at Milligan College


MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (July 14, 2003) – Local youth can advance their musical abilities by learning from several distinguished musicians and faculty at the fifth annual Milligan College Strings Camp, July 28 – August 1.

The day camp is open to all string players from the sixth grade through adult, with various orchestras and classes based on age and performance level. Students will participate in a variety of musical activities, including orchestra, chamber ensemble, private lessons, music history, popular music and fiddling.

“Strings Camp will help students strengthen their musical abilities and talents while forming relationships with others of similar interests,” said Dr. Kellie Brown, assistant professor of the practice of music at Milligan College and director of the Milligan College Chamber Orchestra, who serves as director of the Milligan College Strings Camp.

The camp features an accomplished faculty from throughout the United States. The faculty includes: Steve Leonard, director of the String Orchestra Program for the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestras of Atlanta; Lisa Hollis, violinist and teacher in Flagstaff, Ariz.; and Katie Hamilton, cello teacher at Milligan College and symphony performer.

Music at Milligan College is part of the larger area of performing, visual and communicative arts. Students may major or minor in music or elect music courses. Milligan offers degrees in music education, general music studies and music ministry. Milligan students have the opportunity to study applied voice and instruments and participate in a variety of ensembles including Milligan Singers, Concert Choir, Milligan College Chamber Orchestra, Milligan College Jazz Ensemble, Johnson City Symphony and various chamber groups.
