Education professor and former Air Force administrator to be keynote speaker at “No Child Left Behind Conference”

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (June 11, 2003) – Dr. Beverly Schmalzried, who joined Milligan’s faculty this month as professor and chair of the education area, will be the afternoon keynote speaker at tomorrow’s (June 12) “No Child Left Behind” Conference at the Toy F. Reid Employee Center at Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport.

For the past 20 years, Schmalzried has been the senior manager responsible for all planning, policy, and resource management of the Air Force’s programs for children and youth. Under her guidance, the Air Force’s early childhood education programs were designated as a “model for the nation” by the former administration, United States Congress, and the National Women’s Law Center.

Schmalzried holds an M.S. in family and child development from Kansas State University and a Ph.D. in child development from Florida State University. She helped set the standard for the Department of Defense by requiring and helping all Air Force school age programs to achieve national accreditation.

Thursday’s event is sponsored by a long list of local colleges, community organizations and businesses. The intent is for those in Northeast Tennessee to explore the regional implementation of the “No Child Left Behind” federal legislation.

The conference includes sessions for educators, parents, community members, administrators, and business and policy makers. Dr. Carol D’Amico, assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Vocational and Adult Education, will be the morning keynote speaker, and Jacque Johnson of Tennessee Parents First will join Schmalzried as an afternoon keynote speaker.

Panel members include D’Amico, Joseph Fisher, Rick McInturf, John O’Dell, Phil Roberson and Vance Rugaard.

Registration for the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. conference is free. Please contact Lucretia Sanders at 423.224.2070 or Judy Holden at 423.979.3200 x120. For more information on Dr. Beverly Schmalzried and the Milligan College Education program, please visit www.milligan.edu or call 423.461.8719.
