32 tons of clothing to send to Ukraine

by Courtney Siber, PR intern

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 26, 2003) – For the third consecutive year, the “Tri-Cities Clothing Drive for Ukraine” will be sending over 32 tons of used clothing to the Ukraine to be distributed through churches to orphans, widows and the disabled.

On Sat., March 29, starting at 10 a.m. for five to six hours, Milligan College students and volunteers from area churches will load approximately 400 85-pound bags of clothing into a 40-foot long shipping container. The container will be one of 45 shipments MASTER Provisions will ship to the Ukraine this year.

MASTER Provisions is a Christian non-profit organization based in northern Kentucky that was formed in 1994 by Milligan graduate Roger Babik. The organization sends clothing and the message of the Gospel to the economically distressed in north central Ukraine. The clothing is either given away or sold at very low prices and all profits go to local churches in Ukraine. Past revenues have helped to build six churches in the city of Brovary.

Milligan has helped support this ministry in the Tri-Cities for the past three years. This year the college’s connection is even closer since 2002 graduate Dave Mayer now serves as regional coordinator for MASTER Provisions. Mayer hopes to eventually become a missionary pilot and engineer for the organization. He has volunteered with the “Clothes for the Ukraine” since it began coming to the Tri-Cities.

Mayer hopes to have a full container by Saturday and expects a good turnout of volunteers to pack the container for shipment. The drive is held in the canyon parking lot of the lower Steve Lacy Fieldhouse on the campus of Milligan College.

Clothes can be dropped off and volunteers can help sort and pack at the following times this week: Thurs., Mar. 27, 1-4 p.m. and 5-8 p.m.; Fri., Mar. 28, 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m.; and Sat., Mar. 29, 10 a.m.
