The Physical Plant building at Milligan collapsed on Saturday evening, Feb. 22, at approximately 5 p.m. The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined; the block wall on the south side gave way unexpectedly. Once the foundation began to give way, the interior floors collapsed, dragging the roof in on top of costly equipment stored inside the facility. Fortunately the one security guard who was in the building at the time escaped with no injuries.
The local fire chief, head of the building department, and civil defense departments have all examined the building externally and will be involved in helping the college determine next steps. The Elizabethton fire chief and Carter County road crews have also made checks throughout the rest of campus and ensured that other college buildings are safe and under no danger after the heavy rains we’ve had. Emergency measures have been put in place, along with temporary arrangements for maintenance and housekeeping personnel who work in the building.
Though the 4,000 square foot building was humble, it was functional for the college. It contained computer and office equipment, tractors and lawnmowers, numerous power tools, generators, vans and trucks.
The college has lost an essential facility, along with the majority of equipment, vehicles and supplies used to maintain the operation of the college. These pictures do not adequately convey the true cost of this damage for the college. The building appears to be a total loss. Three of the vehicles stored inside have been destroyed. The building is currenty so unstable we cannot even enter it to retrieve the few small tools and pieces of equipment that might be salvaged. Of course, the college carries insurance on each of its buildings. The insurance carrier is currently working to determine if we have a valid claim. Even if we receive payment from the insurance company, we are estimating that the insurance will fall short of covering this loss by as much as $250,000.
We would greatly appreciate you making this a matter of prayer. Replacement cost is estimated to be in the range of $500,000–and the college must move forward to replace both the building and equipment immediately.
