The choir is a mixed group of 28 students from throughout the United States and several countries. They will sing various styles of choral music, from classical to contemporary. Numerous well-known selections are included in the concert.
Many of the students in the choir are music majors or minors who plan careers in music education or in music ministry. Various other majors are also represented in the group.
The Milligan choir upholds a long tradition as an outstanding college choir. In its past, it has sung at the invitation of the President at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC. The choir has toured throughout England, with special performances in Coventry Cathedral and in the Civic Centre of the City of Birmingham.
More recently, the Milligan College Concert Choir has sung at the North American Christian Convention and the Conference on World Evangelism-National Missionary Convention. This year the choir performed at the Tennessee State Convention of the American Choral Directors’ Association.
The Milligan Concert Choir is under the direction of John Wakefield, associate professor and chair of music at Milligan. Wakefield is a veteran of many years as a choral conductor in Illinois, California and Ohio. He is active in the American Choral Directors Association, National Association of Teachers of Singing, the National Church Music Conference, and The Hymn Society of the United States and Canada.
Accompanists for the choir are Ross Bader, a music education major at Milligan, and Rachel Cunningham, a general music-applied emphasis major at Milligan.
Admission to the concert is free. The public is invited to attend. For more information, contact the music office at 423-461-8723.
