Milligan celebrates diversity

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Feb. 14, 2003) – Milligan College will host a performance by the ETSU Gospel Choir and a media presentation by the college’s student diversity committee at an 11 a.m. convocation service Tuesday, Feb. 18, in Seeger Chapel.

“The goal of the video is to provide awareness of black history,” says Aldith Seraphin, a member of Milligan’s student diversity committee. Entitled “Street Smarts,” the video reviews students’ knowledge about black history.

The college also has an Ethnic Diversity Committee of faculty and staff members who seek to celebrate diversity and integrate minority groups in many other ways throughout the year, in addition to the recognition given to Black History in the month of February, explained committee chair Dr. Phillip Kenneson, associate professor of theology and philosophy at Milligan.

Last month (Jan. 22 & 23) Milligan hosted a lecture series by Chris Rice, one of today’s leading authors and speakers on racial reconciliation. Currently a student at Duke Divinity School, Rice is the former director of the International Study Center of Voice of Calvary Ministries, a nationally acclaimed interracial urban ministry in Jackson, Miss.

Special events and guest speakers like Rice are “a wonderful opportunity to keep the conversation going,” said Kenneson.

Last year Milligan also hired a senior admissions counselor to focus on multicultural recruitment.

“It is our desire that the message of Milligan be communicated with students from all backgrounds,” said David Mee, vice president for enrollment management.

“We continually strive to bring awareness to a variety of multi-cultural issues so our students will celebrate diversity on a daily basis,” said Mee.
